Undoubtedly one of the oldest
buildings in Mawnan Smith, this thatched, cob walled public house,
converted from three cottages, is documented to date back as
far as the 15th century. The first recorded landlord was Walter
Lowry in 1695, when it had a small holding alongside and a brew
house.
The Red Lion is reputed to have
one or several ghosts, and although mishievous it doesn't detract
from the pub's traditional warm welcome, offering you excellent
food, ale and international wine.
The pub, which has three open
log fires and car park facilites, is open daily all year from
11am - 3pm and 6pm - 11pm, with food served from 12pm - 2:30pm
and 6:30pm - 10pm. There is smoking and non-smoking dining areas
and a separate restaurant where we offer a full a la carte menu,
daily specials menu and bar snacks for all the family. We aim
to use local, organic produce with fish one of our main specialities.
On a Sunday we have a traditional roast, with a two course meal
costing £6.95, and in summer we offer an all you can eat
buffet for just £4.95.
We offer an international wine
menu, as well as a good selection of national and Cornish guest
ales, such as Skinners' Cornish Knocker and Sharps' Doom Bar.
The pub, which is featured in the Good Food Pub Guide and Good
Beer Guide, runs theme nights, has pub games and holds a quiz
evening every Tuesday when a gallon of beer is up for grabs!
Set in the village of Mawnan
we are ideally situated for visitors to Trebah Garden, Glendurgen
Garden and Carwinnion Garden, as well as Argal Reservoir and
Budock Vean golf course. There is also the three nearby beaches
of Durgen, Maenporth and Barr to explore.
